Whenever you are preparing to begin your homeschooling adventure there is one area of planning and discussion that will often get overlooked. Most homeschooling parents have to live on only one income so that the other parent can be the child's full time teacher. This is why it is important to be penny wise and cost efficient. Herein is where a little creativity and some practice can help you put together some very effective home school materials in your home.
Storing Your Home School Materials
The first decision you need to make is where to keep your home school materials. This is where an extra bedroom or den can be very useful. You will also find that this central organizational approach will be a lot more cost efficient since you will be able to easily determine what home school materials you already have and what you need to purchase. Without this good organization you will find yourself purchasing duplicates and unneeded materials when you
Religious festivals A collection of worksheets for use when teaching religious festivals. The worksheets include written activities, images and things to make. Wonderful World of Weather This standards-based Real Time Data Module has been created for use by students in the elementary grades to allow them to investigate weather phenomena both locally as well as in other places around the world. By using hands-on activities and real-time data investigations, the students will develop a basic understanding of how weather can be described in measurable quantities, such as temperature, wind and precipitation. The lesson plans which make up this module have been designed to allow teachers to select the ones which fit into their curriculum to allow for flexibility in implementation. Take a Dip: The Water in Our Lives Join students around the world in this Environmental Collaborative Project and team up to test the quality and research the cultural significance of fresh water. You will have the opportunity to compare the water quality of your local river, stream, lake or pond and the stories and practices dealing with water in your community with other fresh water sources around the world. The focus of the project is to assess water quality based on physical characteristics and chemical substances. Stowaway Adventure Project This multidisciplinary Internet-based learning experience has been designed to expose students to real world problem solving through unique uses of instructional technologies. In particular, students will use real time data from the Internet to track a real ship at sea, determine its destination and predict when it will arrive. In addition, they will have the opportunity to monitor the weather conditions at sea and predict when rough weather might impact on the ship's arrival time. Population Growth Project This series of activities explores the mathematical and environmental aspects of population growth. How fast is the population growing? Has it always grown at this rate? Are the populations of different countries growing differently? How can we predict the population in the future? How will a growing population impact the environment? Navigational Vectors Project You may be able to navigate the roads, but can you navigate the skies? There are no signs to point you in the right direction. How do pilots find their way? Learn the principles of aviation navigation in this real time data project! After completing a number of pilot training lessons in which students learn how to use vectors, read real time weather maps, and track real planes flying in U.S. skies, students then put their knowledge to the test by taking the Pilot Test Flight. Here they will solve an authentic real world problem using science and mathematics. Musical Plates: A Study of Plate Tectonics Earthquakes, a scientific and physical phenomenon, affect our lives in many ways. In this project, students use Real-Time earthquake and volcano data from the Internet to explore the relationship between earthquakes, plate tectonics, and volcanoes. Movie in the Making In this project students will report on a book by describing how they would turn that book into a motion picture. After reading and studying the main components of their novel (character, plot, conflict, climax and denouement), students will use their imaginations to explain how they would cast and direct the movie versions. This project also provides enrichment activities where in the students will access archived materials such as the Academy Awards Data Base, movie posters, and movie reviews. Noon Day Project The Goal of the Noon Day Project is to have students measure the circumference of the earth using a method that was first used by Eratosthenes over 2000 years ago. Students at various sites around the world will measure shadows cast by a meter stick and compare their results. From this data students will be able to calculate the circumference of the earth. Gulf Stream Voyage The Gulf Stream Voyage is an online multidisciplinary project which utilises both real time data and primary source materials to help guide students to discover the science and history of the Gulf Stream. Students will investigate this great ocean current, how it affects the Atlantic Ocean and some of mankind's experiences dealing with it. This voyage includes activities for marine science, earth science, chemistry, physics, biology, maths, history and language arts. All may be easily used in today's technology enhanced classroom.
